Mythbuntu
June 26, 2007
Hi,
I’m involved in the setting up of Mythbuntu which is an Ubuntu derivative focused upon setting up a standalone MythTV system similar to Knoppmyth or Mythdora. On top of just been MythTV we also hoping to make it easy for the user to setup the following (although not all in the first release)
- Live disc frontend
- Diskless frontend
- Easy installation/configuration of frontend and backend masters/slaves
- Easy use of LVM partitions
- Sharing of videos/recordings/music over SMB/NFS
- Setting up NAS for video/recording/music storage
- Easy installation/configuration LIRCD
However I’m interested in what other features you’d like to see added in the future and what would make it more of the ideal solution for you to use?
EDIT The alpha2 has now been released

I would like to see some easy setup for DVB cards
1. Easy install drivers for DVB cards
2. Easy chose satellite for DVB-S cards
3. Easy update transponders list and edit
4. Some kind of meter where you can see the signal strength it will save lot of time when setting up DVB cards.
I can not wait for the Alpha2

I look forward to this being finalized as ‘stable’. I have found KnoppMyth’s Lilo to be a point of major instability in their distribution and from my communications with them, they do not want to switch to GRUB. I am glad that Ubuntu is making a good MythTV version.
I do not see anything needed greatly for the liveCD. Though perhaps the mythweb plugin would be nice, especially with .htaccess files setup for security.
Thanks for working on this, it’s an awesome idea and works great for me so far.
when I found out about this project, I was so excited. This is exactly what someone like me needs. Put the disk in, and it works.
In all honesty, I’d love to see the open-source project galleon.tv incorporated to allow for seamless connectivity between a mythbox and a tivo.
I’d also like to be able to access the Firefox web browser from within the interface so that we can watch online videos. Specifically, some of the streaming programs from the networks’ websites.
